Social Justice in the Church

Desert

Nehemiah 5:14-15,18
14 I would like to mention that for the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah from the twentieth until the thirty-second year of the reign of King Artaxerxes neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance.  15 This was quite a contrast to the former governors who had laid heavy burdens on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine, besides a pound of silver. Even their assistants took advantage of the people. But because of my fear of God, I did not act that way... I refused to claim the governor's food allowance because the people were already having a difficult time.

  • We were not entitled to grace.  But, we received it.
  • We were not entitled to health.  But, it is ours.
  • We should not be among the top 5% of the wealthiest in the world.  But, we are.
  • We should not be able to freely receive the Gospel of Jesus.  But, we have.
  • Millions do not have access to clean water.  But, we water our lawns with it.
  • Hundreds of millions work a year for less than a $100.  We make that in less than a day.
  • Multitudes are jailed for speaking out against their government.  More than half of us are too lazy to vote.
  • Millions are killed and imprisoned for praying to Jesus.  But, we fail to assemble once a week to honor Him.

How can we indulge in our portion without even giving a thought to the oppressed around the world and in our neighborhoods?

  • May God raise up a people who will pass up their earned portion for the sake of those who are beaten down and enslaved.
  • May God awake the fed, the comfortable, and the relatively rich to plead for the cause of the abused.
  • May God's Kingdom come because we reject apathy.
  • May God's Kingdom come because we embrace the Call of Christ to serve before being served.
